Dr Louise Lynch
Pain Management Specialist, Health NZ - Coast & Hutt Valley, Wellington, NZ
I have been Clinical Leader in Pain Management at Wellington Regional Hospital since September 2018 after emigrating to New Zealand from the UK. My background is in anaesthesia but I have been a consultant / SMO in chronic pain management for a quarter of a century now. My interests in the UK were principally in interventional cancer pain management – in particular implanted intrathecal pumps – as well as a more general but mostly interventional non-cancer-related-pain practice. My interests are much broader in New Zealand and much less interventional.

My session today will take in a brief overview of chronic pain definitions and not just the duration of greater than 3-6 months. Chronic pain is now considered a disease entity in its own right with its own features and associations and a revised lengthy definition. We will consider primary and secondary pain conditions and the three pain types – nociceptive, neuropathic and nociplastic.
We will also discuss what those differences mean in terms of management.
